Visit Liwa
Liwa is one of the UAE’s most spectacular desert regions, located southwest of Abu Dhabi on the northern edge of the great Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), the largest continuous sand desert in the world. With its vast dunes, traditional oasis settlements and remarkable desert landscapes, Liwa lies approximately 220 km from Abu Dhabi and 330 km from Dubai.
History
Liwa has played an important role in the history of Abu Dhabi and was traditionally home to communities of the Bani Yas tribal confederation. The Al Bu Falah branch of the Bani Yas, from which Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family descends, originally lived in the Liwa oasis before establishing themselves in Abu Dhabi.
Historically, Liwa consisted of numerous settlements scattered along the oasis, known locally as mahdar. These included Mezairaa, Al Mariyah, Shah, Nafeer, Hameem, Arada, Therwaneeyah, Malqata and Bateen. Access to groundwater made permanent settlement and date cultivation possible, allowing communities to establish wells, farms and palm groves across the oasis.
Life in Liwa traditionally followed the seasons and the availability of water and resources. Local communities relied heavily on date cultivation, livestock and the desert environment. Homes and shelters were constructed using locally available materials, including date-palm fronds, while traditional tents were woven from animal hair.
Modern times
The transformation of Liwa accelerated during the second half of the 20th century with oil exploration and the development of the UAE. New roads, housing, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure gradually connected the oasis communities with the rest of Abu Dhabi. Under the leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Liwa developed from relatively isolated desert settlements into a modern and accessible part of the Al Dhafra Region, while retaining its strong connection to traditional oasis and desert life.

A word of advice
For those who want to experience Liwa at its most peaceful, an overnight stay in the desert offers the opportunity to enjoy sunset, the night sky and sunrise among the dunes. Guests with less time can choose a full-day tour and still experience many of Liwa’s most impressive landscapes and highlights.
