Itinerary – Full Day Liwa Safari

Our journey begins at Metropolitan Al Mafraq Hotel in Abu Dhabi, travelling west towards the Al Dhafra Region and the Liwa Oasis. As we leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes, with pale desert sands giving way to warmer shades of orange and gold as we travel deeper into the region. After a comfort stop along the way, we continue to Madinat Zayed, the administrative center of the Al Dhafra Region, where we visit a local market offering an interesting glimpse into everyday life in this part of the UAE.

We then stop at a local Arabic restaurant for lunch, where you can enjoy a traditional Arabic main dish, accompanied by green salad, Arabic sweets and a soft drink.

Into the Liwa Oasis

After lunch, we continue towards Liwa, travelling through small desert settlements and extensive date palm plantations. The date palm has played an essential role in life throughout the Liwa Oasis for generations. During our visit to a date farm, your guide will explain the importance of this remarkable tree and traditional date cultivation in the region. We then continue into the heart of Liwa to visit one of the historic Liwa forts, surrounded by palm plantations and the beautiful oasis landscape. A stop at a local date shop also gives you the opportunity to discover and taste some of the many varieties of dates produced in the UAE.

Moreeb Dune – Gateway to the Empty Quarter

From Liwa, we head south through increasingly dramatic desert scenery towards the famous Moreeb Dune, one of the most impressive landmarks in the region. Rising approximately 300 metres above the surrounding landscape, Moreeb has become famous as a meeting place for 4×4 enthusiasts and desert motorsport events. Standing beneath this enormous wall of sand gives you a striking impression of the immense scale of the Empty Quarter. From Moreeb, we continue deeper into the desert as the landscape becomes increasingly remote and dramatic.

The Desert Adventure Begins

We stop at a traditional camel farm, where you can learn about the importance of camels to generations of Bedouin families and their role in traditional desert life. While you explore the farm, your guide prepares the 4×4 for the dunes by reducing the tyre pressure. We then leave the tarmac behind and enter the vast dunes of the Empty Quarter, climbing and descending across the changing terrain in an exciting roller-coaster-style drive. The landscape constantly changes between towering dunes, sand-bush valleys and the flat salt plains known locally as Sabkhas. Depending on the sand conditions, you may also experience the remarkable Sand Avalanche, sometimes known as the “Singing Sands.” Along the route, we pass protected desert areas where, with a little luck, you may occasionally spot an Arabian gazelle or other desert wildlife.

Before leaving the desert, we stop to discover another of Liwa’s natural curiosities — the Sand Roses. These remarkable rose-shaped formations are formed from crystallized gypsum beneath the Sabkha salt flats and can take thousands of years to develop.

After a full day exploring the culture, landscapes and dunes of Liwa, we begin our return journey to Abu Dhabi, bringing the Full Day Liwa Explorer to an end.

Liwa Overnight Camping Experience – LWA-IND-2

The Liwa Explorer + Overnight Camping (LWA-IND-2) follows the Full Day Liwa Explorer experience before continuing deeper into the desert for sunset, BBQ dinner and an overnight stay beneath the stars.

Available from October to May, this extended experience allows you to enjoy the Empty Quarter after the daytime visitors have left, experiencing the changing colours of sunset, the peaceful desert night and sunrise over the dunes the following morning.

Sunset & Desert Camp

We arrive at our secluded desert campsite approximately one hour before sunset, giving you time to settle in and climb a nearby dune to enjoy the changing colours of the desert as the sun disappears behind the dunes of the Empty Quarter.

Meanwhile, your guide prepares a freshly grilled BBQ dinner. After dinner, relax with traditional mint tea and local dates while enjoying the peaceful desert atmosphere far from the lights of the cities.

Night Sky & Overnight Camping

As darkness falls, enjoy the magnificent Liwa night sky away from city lights. Depending on visibility, the moon phase and sky conditions, stars, planets and other celestial features may be visible, making stargazing a memorable part of the overnight desert experience. For your overnight stay, we provide comfortable igloo-style tents with mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags, allowing you to experience a genuine night in the Empty Quarter while enjoying basic camping comfort.

Sunrise, Sand Roses & Breakfast

Wake early to experience the peaceful sunrise over the Liwa dunes, followed by a freshly prepared breakfast at the campsite. After breakfast, we pack our camp and begin our morning journey out of the desert. Along the way, we stop at a unique location on the Sabkha salt flats to discover the Sand Roses — remarkable rose-shaped formations of crystallized gypsum that develop naturally beneath the Sabkha over thousands of years.

We then continue our journey back to Abu Dhabi, bringing your overnight adventure in the Empty Quarter to an end.

• Advance payment is required to confirm the booking. The required payment amount will be advised at the time of reservation.
• Published rates are in AED; USD amounts are approximate equivalents.
• Children aged 12 years and below are charged according to the applicable child rate shown.
• In case of cancellation after payment, any refund or change of date is at the company’s discretion.
• Rescheduling may be subject to an additional charge depending on circumstances and costs already incurred.
