Liwa Desert Adventure (LWA-HTL-1)
(2.5 hours / 70km) ………….. Timings (09:00 Daily)
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Moreb Dune / Camel & Date Farms / Sabkha / Avalanche / Sand Roses / Roller coaster dune drive
This Liwa desert tour departs from Liwa Hotel and Western Hotel Liwa and travels south towards the famous Moreeb Dune, one of the most impressive landmarks in the Liwa Desert. Rising dramatically from the surrounding landscape, Moreeb Dune is also famous for the annual motorsport events held at its base.
We continue through the spectacular dunes of the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), the largest continuous sand desert in the world. Along the way, we stop at a traditional camel farm, offering an insight into camel herding and the important role camels have played in Bedouin desert life. From here, the real 4×4 desert adventure begins. After reducing the tyre pressure, we enter the vast dunes of the Empty Quarter for an exciting roller-coaster-style drive across towering dunes and constantly changing desert terrain. The landscape changes constantly between towering dunes, Sabkha salt flats and sand-bush valleys. Depending on the sand conditions, you may also experience the remarkable Sand Avalanche, sometimes known as the “Singing Sands”, one of Liwa’s fascinating natural desert phenomena.
As we travel through the desert, we pass protected areas where, with a little luck, you may spot Arabian gazelles and other native desert wildlife in their natural environment. Our final desert stop reveals one of Liwa’s unusual natural formations — the Sand Roses. These beautiful rose-shaped crystals are formed from crystallized gypsum beneath the Sabkha salt flats and can take thousands of years to develop.
Before returning to your hotel, we make a final stop at one of Liwa’s popular date farms, where your guide will explain the history of date cultivation in the Liwa Oasis and the important role the date palm has played in traditional desert life.
Liwa Sunset Desert Safari & BBQ (LWA-HTL-2)
(4 hours / 50 km) – Timings (15:30)
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Camel Farm / Sabkha / Avalanche / Sand Rose / Sunset / BBQ Dinner & Evening Sky
Set off into the spectacular Liwa Desert for an afternoon 4×4 adventure combining the towering dunes of the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali) with traditional desert life, sunset and a freshly prepared BBQ dinner beneath the open sky.
Our first stop is at a traditional camel farm, where you can learn about the importance of camels and their role in Bedouin desert life. If the owner is present, you may also have the opportunity to meet him and, occasionally, see his falcons.
From here, we prepare the 4×4 for the desert by reducing the tyre pressure before heading deep into the dunes. Enjoy an exciting 4×4 dune drive across the constantly changing landscape of the Empty Quarter, from towering dunes and sand-bush valleys to the vast Sabkha salt flats. Depending on the sand conditions, you may experience the remarkable Sand Avalanche, also known as the “Singing Sands,” when cascading sand produces a deep, resonating sound across the dunes — one of Liwa’s most fascinating natural desert phenomena.
We then stop to discover the remarkable Sand Roses, naturally formed gypsum crystals found beneath the Sabkha salt flats. Their delicate, rose-like shapes make them one of Liwa’s most unusual natural desert formations.
As the afternoon light begins to soften, we arrive at our secluded desert campsite approximately one hour before sunset. Climb a nearby dune and enjoy spectacular views as the sun slowly disappears behind the vast dunes of the Empty Quarter while your guide prepares the BBQ dinner.
After dinner, relax with a cup of traditional mint tea and local dates while watching the magnificent Liwa night sky. Far from the lights of the cities, the peaceful surroundings and countless stars provide a memorable ending to your evening in the Empty Quarter.
After enjoying the peaceful desert evening, the adventure continues with an exciting night drive through the dunes, experiencing the Liwa Desert from an entirely different perspective after dark. We then make our way back to your hotel, bringing your unforgettable Liwa Sunset Desert Safari to an end.
